Fish Hoek – some history

Fish Hoek False Bay 1824 Did you know that where the town of Fish Hoek is now used to be sea? The valley was previously under water hence the soil being rather terrible for gardening! The area towards Cape Point was an island then. However, that was very, very long ago, and now we are privileged to have this lovely valley in which to live (us lucky locals) and visit for a holiday (those of you who don’t live here). Simonstown: Saturday 1 week before Christmas

Saturday, a week before Christmas and the weather was perfect. At 8:20am I received a phonecall to go and have breakfast in Simonstown and it didn’t require a second thought.

Simonstown: The Meeting PlaceWe met at The Meeting Place in St George’s Street (the main road through Simonstown), a place that is a coffee shop, lunch restaurant and knick-knack shop all in one. We sat upstairs overlooking the Simon’s Town yacht basin and just enjoyed the scenery, the coffee and the breakfast. I love coffee, and I’m glad to say it was really good and very importantly, hot. I had French toast with bacon and maple syrup for breakfast – not something I’d normally have at home – and would recommend it. Continue reading

South African Navy Submarine: SAS Assegaai

submarine-simonstown-sas-assegaai-01 The South African Navy decommissioned the Daphne class submarine SAS Assegaai a few years ago and, like it’s sister subs, was doomed to being dismantled for scrap. Retired navy Admiral Arne Soderlund however had other ideas, and set about project SOS – Save Our Submarine. (see slideshow at the bottom of this post for all pics) Continue reading

Cape Town Steam Train

cape-town-steam-train Atlantic Rail in Cape Town operates an old fashioned steam train that runs from Cape Town through to Simon’s Town. The railway line between Glencairn and Simon’s Town was under repair for most of 2010, causing the train to go no further than Glencairn station during this time.
